The Oculus system was launched in Russia: it searches for prohibited content on the network

Today, February 13, the RIA Novosti news outlet, citing its sources, reported that the Main Radio Frequency Center, which is part of Roskomnadzor, officially launched the advanced Russian information system Oculus. This system will be responsible for a very important aspect – it should detect various violations of Russian law among photographs and videos on the Internet, notifying the relevant regulatory authorities about this.

“The developers have already completed work on the Oculus system. In December 2022, it was tested. The Oculus information system has already been launched and is fulfilling the tasks assigned to it in full – it detects violations of the law in images and video materials, ”the Main Radio Frequency Center said.

The specialists explained that the new Russian system uses computer vision technology to recognize images and characters, as well as set scenes and actions on related content, which violate Russian law. Moreover, the technology allows you to analyze the text, automatically identifying prohibited content: “extremist topics, calls for mass illegal events, suicide, pro-drug content, LGBT propaganda.” The most surprising thing is that the system, as the developers said, was trained in manual mode – for this, the center’s operators processed an average of 106 images and 101 videos per day.

The work, of course, is titanic, but in the end, manual work can be completely abandoned, because the Oculus system will analyze more than 200 thousand images per day, that is, it will take about three seconds for computer vision technology to process one photo. Taking into account the fact that the modern Internet is simply huge and there is also an insane amount of content in it, it simply cannot be done without such technologies.

“In recent years, more and more materials prohibited by law have appeared on the Internet. Such content needs to be found and blocked before it is widely distributed in the online space, especially among children and youth,” the authors of the project added.

It is worth recalling that the contract for the development of this system was concluded relatively recently, in September last year, and the project price is quite modest – only 57.7 million rubles.
