A joint Cairo-American team of archaeologists have discovered an ancient brewery in the Egyptian city of Abydos, which is approximately 5,000 years old – according to scientists, it is the oldest in the world, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt.

As one of the researchers noted, the period of the creation of the brewery may refer to the era of Pharaoh Narmer, who ruled in ancient Egypt at the end of the XXXII century BC.

The brewery was divided into eight sections, each of which contained 40 pots for the production of a drink – water was heated in them, which was then mixed with grain. The brewery could produce about 22,400 liters of beer at the same time.

According to scientists, in those days beer was often used not only for drinking at feasts, but also for performing sacrificial royal rituals.
