Archaeologists have discovered the most ancient dwelling of primitive people: this is the Vanderwerk cave (“Miracle” in Afrikaans, – ed.) in the African Kalahari Desert. The researchers reported the find in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews.
Authors from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Toronto claim to have found fragments of simple stone tools, animal bones and ash, which (as shown by magnetic and isotope analysis of sedimentary layers up to 2.5 m thick) are approximately 1.8 million years old.
The presence of ashes of this age, scientists believe, is evidence of the earliest known deliberate use of fire by the ancestors of modern people. They kept the fire on, either for heating, or to scare away predators, or for all together.

This cave is one of the rare places with a more or less continuous archaeological “chronicle” of human activity, which spans millions of years.
Earlier, scientists discovered the ancestor of modern animals – and humans as well: he is 555 million years old (photo).
