The Omicron variant is now predominant in the Netherlands, authorities have said, warning of an increase in hospital admissions.
Despite the reduction in the number of infections, with 9,213 positive cases today, the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant “will lead to new infections in the coming days,” the National Institute of Public Health announced.
“This will also lead to an increase in the number of hospital admissions,” a press release said.
The Netherlands announced, ten days ago, the implementation of a lockdown for the holiday season, in order to stop the emergence of new cases of Omicron. Unnecessary shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas and museums were closed until 14 January.
The decision appears to have a positive impact, according to the Dutch National Institute of Public Health, with a reduction in hospitalizations from 256 patients last week to 191 this week.
“The real impact of the measures is expected in early January,” the Dutch authorities said.
