The mimosa is only Italian, the party is not. It wasn’t March 8 though. There women’s day was officially born in the United States on February 28, 1909 by the will of the American socialist party. On that day, a demonstration was organized in favor of the women’s right to vote. In 1910 the initiative was supported in Copenhagen at the International Conference of Socialist Women.
Protests
That of February 1909 was not the first demonstration for women’s rights and universal suffrage. Already in the mid-1800s in various parts of the world there was a fight (in New Zealand the female vote has existed since 1893). They are the Suffragette movements. Thousands of women went on strike between November 1908 and February 1909 in New York City for better working conditions and wage increases.
Legend
The story that the day was established in memory of the workers who died in the fire of the Cotton factory in New York is not true. They weren’t locked up in the factory by the owner so they couldn’t take part in a demonstration. The legend was born after the Second World War and the place and date often change. The real fire took place on March 25, 1911. 146 people died in the New York factory of the Triangle, mostly immigrant women.
Date
The date of March 8 comes from Russia. On that day the women of St.Pietroburgo they took to the streets in 1917 to demand an end to the First World War and protested against the Tsar. The delegates of the Second International Conference of Communist Women chose this as the date for International Worker’s Day. March 8 is the official date of Women’s Day also by choice of the UN. The United Nations Organization celebrated 1975 as International Women’s Year. In Italy the first celebration dates back to 1922, but it was strengthened in 1945 when the Unione Donne in Italia recalled it in the areas of Italy already freed from fascism.
Mimosa
An Italian peculiarity that of the yellow flower arrived in 1946. The mimosa was chosen because it blooms in the first days of March. Teresa Mattei, the youngest elected to the Constituent Assembly, pointed to her. It was a poorer and more widespread flower in the countryside than the French violet.
