The coronavirus pandemic has significantly impacted the way people spend their personal time. In particular, the situation affected the consumption of the Internet and online resources, since there was quarantine and many switched to remote work and study. As it turned out, dependence began to increase a year before these events. According to a new report from analyst firm App Annie, since 2019 smartphone users have spent 30% more time in applications – 4.2 hours a day, which almost reaches the total timing of three full-length films.
In the first quarter of 2021, daily time spent in apps exceeded 4 hours for the first time in the United States, Turkey, Mexico and India. The last country on the list shows the biggest jump, with Indian users using apps 80% more often compared to the first quarter of 2019. In some regions (Brazil, South Korea and Indonesia), the average was even higher – more than 5 hours.
The report also presented a list of breakthrough apps on Android and iOS that saw a big spike in downloads during the quarter. So, in the period from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021, there was an increase in secure messengers – Telegram and Signal. In the UK, Germany and France, Signal even took first place in terms of the number of downloads, and in the USA it moved up to fourth position. Telegram was # 9 in the UK, # 5 in France and # 7 in the US. In Russia, the top 5 includes Dixie, StarMaker Karaoke, Yandex.Market, GetContact and ToonMe.
The rating of the most “breakthrough” games includes High Heels, a runner advertised in TikTok by Zynga (7th in Germany, 6th in Russia and 3rd in China), another runner Crash Bandicoot: On the Run from King studio with 21 million installations in just 4 days (# 1 in Germany, # 2 in the US, and # 3 in the UK) and several new projects including Project Makeover, DOP 2: Delete One Part and Phone Case DIY.
