The “paradise” of Kyoto is expensive: Dramatic increase in taxes for luxury accommodation

Authorities in Kyoto, one of Japan’s most popular historical destinations, today announced a significant increase in accommodation taxes to be imposed on visitors from 2026. These taxes will reach up to €60 per night per person, depending on the type of accommodation. Their implementation is expected to begin in March 2026, subject to approval by the city council. As with other popular tourist destinations worldwide, such as Venice and the Maya Bay in Thailand, Kyoto faces serious problems due to overtourism. The city, known for its Buddhist temples, picturesque streets lined with geishas and traditional kimonos, welcomes more and more visitors, which puts the local infrastructure to the test.
