The Peloponnese acquires a modern airport: The competition for … Kalamata is announced

By Fotis Fotinos

The effort of the Superfund for the utilization of the remaining 23 state regional airports starts from Kalamata.

In the near future, the Superfund will announce an international tender for the multi-year concession of Kalamata airport, which is expected to give a significant boost to tourism in the wider area.

The tender will consist of two phases: From the expression of initial interest and from the submission of binding offers, in which the duration of the concession will be finalized.

In any case, according to aviation market analysts, the tender for Kalamata airport will contain enough data from the corresponding one for the 14 regional airports that ended up in Fraport Greece.

Kalamata is expected to attract the interest of several “suitors”, such as airport managers, construction companies and funds, as it is the largest airport in the Peloponnese.

Important tourist benefits for the Peloponnese

“The development of Kalamata airport will give a strong impetus to tourism, not only in the region, but also in the central and southern Peloponnese as a whole. It will expand and upgrade the quality air connection of Kalamata with important travel markets abroad, acting as a catalyst for the further development and upgrading of the tourism product, with obvious benefits for the society and the economy of the region “, said, in an earlier statement, an executive of the Superfund, responsible for the utilization of the 23 state regional airports.

The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from Messina also made a statement yesterday regarding the development of the tender process.

“And if one sees how successful the interventions were made at the other regional airports, the 14, which are currently managed by Fraport, one can understand what it means to upgrade Kalamata airport for the tourist development of the wider area.

“And of course it is an airport that has a dual character, as here will be the big intervention, the big investment, which will upgrade the capabilities of our Air Force to train new pilots with state-of-the-art aircraft,” he said, among other things. the Prime Minister.

It is noted that, according to 2019 data, 341,000 passengers were handled at Kalamata airport, of which 317,000 came from abroad.

Competition is intensifying between airports in Greece

After the planned concession of Kalamata airport to private individuals, one finds that almost all major airports in the country are under private control, as:

– At the Athens airport, the management is exercised by the PSP of Canada.

– The 14 regional airports are operated by Fraport Greece, the majority of which belongs to the German Fraport.

– The Greek GEK TERNA and the Indian GMR are constructing and will manage the new airport of Crete, in Kastelli.

– Which airports can follow? Maybe the airports of Paros and Chios, is something that will be decided by the Superfund.
