The perfect barbecue: everything you need to know from A to Z

The summer is finally peeping out and with it the desire to spend time outdoors with friends. Nothing better then a nice barbecue on the terrace or, for the lucky ones, in a beautiful garden!

Friends
The center of any barbecue is, of course, company.
Make a guest list, not forgetting your most important friends. Once you’ve completed the list, you’ll need to pick a date and time that works for most of your guests. Check that there are no long bridges or the end of school, as some may already be away.

Before sending out invitations to your guests, be sure to check the weather. Since you (as well as the best forecasters) can’t really predict how nice the weather will be during your barbecue, opt for a plan B. All you need to do is set up an outdoor shelter. In case your terrace or patio has a gazebo, set up the party table below. Alternatively, you can install some tarps.

Make the guest list and check if there are vegetarians or allergies to any food.

The meat
A barbecue is naturally incomplete without meat. Plan this part well and make a list of the meats you want to serve at your party. Think about your guest list when you do this, because maybe there are guys and girls who might not like a certain type of meat. You will need to purchase different types of meat, starting with the most common: chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks and sausages. However, try to be creative in your selection. Include other delectable dishes to wow your guests, such as lamb meatballs, tofu skewers, oysters or crab claws. In the morning, prepare the meat: marinate the meat with a mix of vinegar, salt, pepper, oil and herbs. Also in the morning, slice the vegetables to be grilled. There is also room for vegetables, salads, pies, fruit skewers and sweets.

The model of barbecue
The first variable to take into consideration when buying a barbecue is obviously the space available: in fact, there are very compact bbqs that do not take up much space, some completely resealable. Those who have larger spaces, such as a large terrace, can opt for more demanding solutions and choose between a charcoal or gas bbq, the typical American models, with electronic ignition. For those who have a garden, then there are no space limits and you can opt for a classic brick barbecue.

What you need for grilling
An investment in a good set of barbecue tools can last for years. Make sure you have a stainless steel spatula, tongs and a grill fork that can withstand the heat. A basting brush, a fireproof glove and an apron will also come in handy. Don’t forget the extra gas or charcoal for the grill either!

  • Apron

Decorations
To make the barbecue truly unforgettable, you could think of decorating the space dedicated to the barbecue. The type of decor will depend on the style of your party. You can also think of decorations that can be stored and reused for a greener attitude. The final touch: get some lights, yellow or colored, that make the atmosphere of sunsets and summer nights even more special. Alternatively, table or floor candles and lanterns may be for you.

What to prepare the day before
Put a BIG reminder for the day before your BBQ. You will need to be sure to defrost and marinate the meat you are preparing the day before. Leave the meat to marinate so it can absorb the flavor until it’s time to grill. The day before, you can also prepare appetizers and desserts.

Beverages
A good supply of drinks will keep everyone cool and refreshed. There are many drinks ideal for a barbecue in the garden, so you are sure to find something for everyone.

Drinks for All: Offer a variety of soft drinks to children and guests who don’t drink alcohol. The most important drink, especially if it’s hot, is water. Make sure you have plenty of it so everyone can stay hydrated.

Fruit punches are perfect for a summer barbecue and a pitcher of homemade lemonade is always a hit. You can also offer other fun recipes like sparkling cranberry punch or cardinal punch.

Adult Drinks: Filling the refrigerator with ice cold beer is a barbecue tradition. While you can pick up a case of your trusted brand, there are plenty of great beers to explore. Pairing barbecued food with wine is another adventure that can keep you busy all summer long. You can even show off your bartender skills!
