Iran announced today that it has executed the man responsible for a deadly attack that took place in January 2023 at the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran and caused tension between the two neighboring countries. An embassy employee was killed and two people were injured by an armed man who stormed into the diplomatic mission. Iran had stated that the perpetrator’s motives were “personal” while Azerbaijan had accused Tehran of “encouraging the attack”. Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev’s president had then spoke of a “terrorist attack”. The two countries had then exposed diplomats. The attack on the attack was executed this morning “in accordance with the law of equal return,” the judiciary said. The “law of equal return” applies to Iran in assassination cases when the victim’s family wishes to impose the death penalty.
