A photo of two Chinese athletes inadvertently referenced her massacre Tiananmen Square censored on Chinese social media. Lin Yuwei and Wu Yanni’s match numbers form ’64’ – a joint reference to the incident that occurred on June 4.
Discussions about the incident remain taboo Chinawith authorities routinely deleting all mention of the issue from the internet.
In 1989, troops shot hundreds of pro-democracy protesters in Beijing. It remains unclear how many people actually died that day, but estimates by human rights groups range from a few hundred to several thousand dead, as noted by the BBC.
The athletes embraced after a 100m hurdles race at the Asian Games, in which Lin won the gold medal. In the photo she was wearing her runway number 6 next to Wu’s runway number 4.
Users posted on Weibo, one of China’s largest social media platforms, congratulating Lin. However, the posts that contained the photo were replaced with gray squares.

However, the photo does not appear to have been completely erased from the internet, with some Chinese news articles still showing an image of the two athletes.
China has won nearly 300 medals so far at the Asian Games, which are currently being held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. They are going to continue until October 8.
