The pig theorem

Are you struggling with a problem that makes you damn? Do you feel like you’ve tried them all, but nothing seems to work? Are you feeling exhausted and the job seems unsolvable? Here, the solution could be that of the so-called the pig theorem, on which the two English psychologists Pete Lindsay and Mark Bawde, they wrote a book, The pig theorem precisely (De Agostini editions, 176 pages, € 13.90), just released in the bookstore: “The problem is that there is often a” pig “covered in mud ready to throw us into the pigsty with him so that we too can get bogged down in the slime and end up being overwhelmed and that makes us feel stuck.

But, as George Bernard Shaw said: “I learned a long time ago not to wrestle with pigs. You get everything dirty and, in addition, the pigs get a taste for it ”». And so the two authors, experts in coaching and consultants for top managers, draw up in their pages a series of practical tips to avoid getting stuck. First of all, a decisive step in any problem solving process, you need to be aware of having to change the frame: it is incredible, but you will see the picture of the situation differently, so that you can have another approach in the solution.

Then they suggest a trick: imagine seeing what the situation would be like in a crystal ball if a miracle happened. What would you see if the problem was solved? It seems an trick trivial, but it is a game that can really help to focus on what would be the necessary tools to unlock the critical points: “Let’s ignore the nice-to-haves and focus on the need-to-haves” they say Pete Lindsay and Mark Bawde.

Together, the two authors, in 2013, founded Mindflick, a consulting and coaching platform with a particular focus on strategic problem solving: they say they are strong for those who have important obstacles at work: “We design and provide cutting-edge tools to help our customers to bring out their potential. We do this by helping individuals and teams to develop greater self-awareness, maximize their talents and recognize when they need to change ”.
