The pizza and Briatore: «It is not of the Neapolitans». Sorbillo: “It’s a popular dish and it must remain so”

The controversy shows no sign of ending, indeed perhaps we will carry it with us for the whole summer. How much must a pizza cost? Is it true that a pizza with quality ingredients cannot be cheap? In this case, “How can you charge only 4 euros for a pizza?” you ask Flavio Briatore than to his Crazy Pizza, do you sell the margherita for 15 euros? (And the buffalo at 25, while the Pata Negra reaches 65).

The Neapolitans took the matter head on – as expected. Even the regional councilor and President of the Campania Agriculture Commission intervened on the subject, Francesco Emilio Borrelliwho immediately clarified the tone: “On Neapolitan pizza we do not accept lessons from those who have no qualification to make it”he says, while hundreds of people gathered yesterday at the Sorbillo ai Tribunali pizzeria, in the historic center of Naples.

As a sign of support for the popular pizza-dish, the famous Neapolitan pizzeria has in fact chosen to sell the margherita for 4 euros, while it has distributed the closed one for free. In the square, Gino Sorbillo has launched his challenge: «You say that if the pizza is cheap it is not good? Here, we make it this way and the ingredients are these: taste it and tell me how it is ».

The pizza, he continues, «was born as a popular dish – he adds – and must remain so. We like to work with the people and please everyone, children, the unemployed, professionals and retirees. In front of a pizza they are all the same and everyone must be able to afford it ». Far West, in short, a perfect duel from one part of Italy to another, even if Sorbillo also offers the glimmer of a truce: it is a useless controversy, he says, and also proposes the idea of an evening of four-handed pizzas to exchange a little knowledge.

But what happens on the other side? Briatore goes to the Radio24 Mosquito, does not yield an inch and raises. Speaking of the pizza masters he reiterates: «I challenge anyone to make a profit by selling pizza for 4 or 5 euros: it’s impossible. We are giving them a chance, an assist to raise the price of the pizzas and they have not understood it. They are taking advantage of it to advertise … ». Then she takes revenge- “It is not true that the pizza is Neapolitan, it is eaten all over the world. And even if it was invented in Naples, the others have improved it with different tastes: one can invent something and the others can modify it and make it better “- and sinks the knife:”I don’t like Neapolitan pizza because it has too much side dish, then it has a lot of yeast … I prefer the Roman which is thinner. For example in Salerno they make a different pizza, thinner than in Naples. Then, everyone has a taste for him ».

In short, perhaps the four-handed dinner will not be done. But we can wait for the new developments of the now gripping quarrel to cheer up the summer between drought and inflation. However, the question remains open: given that in the end the success of a restaurant – and a pizzeria – is always decided by customers, what is the solution to the new summer catchphrase on the price of pizza? Obviously there isn’t. But the words of Gino Sorbillo have value: “I tried to make tailor-made pizzas, pizzas that were not just discs of pasta served to feed people and that’s it but that could also have a message of generosity, but also of territory, of resistance , of courage, of presence. This thing allowed me to grow and then there were awards and recognitions. Everything has made me always remain the same ».
