The plans for the extensions of Attiki Odos

of Eleni Botas

After the auction of the extension of Kymi Avenue and then the tender for the concession of Attiki Odos run by the HRDH, it is expected to be clarified what will be born with the other three extensions of the road axis: to Lavrio, to Rafitas and to Rafitos to Vouliagmeni Avenue.

The most important of these is the extension of the western peripheral Ymittos to Elliniko, which will include an underground tunnel in Ilioupoli and new bridges on Vouliagmeni Avenue.

The Ministry’s goal for Vouliagmeni Avenue is to be “freed” from the traffic lights and turned into a highway that will supply highways such as the urban tunnel, which will act as “connecting links” between the 3 rings of the capital.

According to the plans so far, the project envisages the construction of a tunnel just over 3 km long, with three lanes per traffic stream, without exits, which will begin to sink to the height of Kaisariani and will end in connection with Vouliagmeni Avenue at the height of the border of Agios Dimitrios and Ilioupoli, a little south of the Metro station of Agios Dimitrios.

The journey will take a few minutes when today, at peak times, more than 30 minutes are required. It is a very important project that in combination with the regeneration in Elliniko will change the map of the basin movements.

Regarding the other two extensions of the Attiki Odos, the one to Rafina provides for the bypass of Marathonos Avenue and the local traffic lights and the other to Lavrio provides for the widening of the existing road from Markopoulo to the port.

According to what has been mentioned by the Deputy Minister of Public Works, George Karagiannis, these two extensions will also include the suburban line, so that the two main ports will have a connection with fixed means.

Although so far it has not been clarified how the works will be auctioned, however many argue that the chances of being auctioned as public works (as with the extension of Kimi) are small, with the concession scenario being considered more prevalent, while There are also some thoughts about placing tolls on the extensions of Attiki Odos.

However nothing should be taken for granted as all the scenarios are on the table and are expected to clear up in the coming months.

Regarding the tender for the extension of Kimi Avenue (the section from Attiki Odos to the Uneven Junction of the National Road), it is scheduled for February 22.

The project concerns the design and construction of a road section of a closed highway section, with a total length of approximately 3.8 km. The total length of the project is estimated at 4.2 km together with the option.

The project that will be studied will be executed within the administrative boundaries of the Municipalities of Pefki and Lykovrysi in the Prefecture of Attica.

The extension of Kymi Avenue to the national road is expected to decongest the network of the above three municipalities, to facilitate the access of many areas of the northern suburbs to the National Road.
