Who knows if the proverbial longevity of the British royal family will allow us to attend another celebratory Jubilee of Elizabeth. Given the temper of the sovereign, it is prudent not to set limits.
In the four days dedicated to the 70 years of the queen’s reign, it was possible to witness the blend that makes this crown so lovable, and loved: a successful mix of rituality and nice anarchy. Louis, the third son of William and Kate, was the elf of the party and brought the disorder where it was not expected. From the very first carriage parade, between the wings of celebrating subjects, hats, veils, horses and high uniforms, he broke the formalities of the greetings. Before him everyone had been measured and composed, but Louis immediately was insistenta bit’ broken down as befits a 4 year old, excessive and pleasantly annoying. Unforgettable the little sister Charlotte who, with the gesture of a consummate expert in royal etiquette, tried in vain to bring him back to the composure that would be more suited to him.
Then the anarchist goblin went up on the balcony of Buckingham Palacea place inaccessible to many of the royals, as Harry and Meghan well know, who for the parade of the Trooping the Color they were at a side window. This time Louis, right next to the queen and dressed like his dad 37 years ago, he chatted quite a bit with his great-grandmother not at all bothered by childish irritation and made the whole world smile covering his ears, shouting And making faces as the Royal Air Force aerobatic team passed over the building and the crowd. A crowd that, had it not been for little Louis and his expressions, might have stood still to ask the usual questions: if Harry and Meghan would eventually appear on the balcony, if there would be peace between brothers, if Elizabeth really bears Camilla, or how different the party would have been if there had been Lady Diana … The unconventional grimaces of the little Duke of Cambridge have brought Elizabeth’s monarchy into the present and further into the future, since social networks have immediately relaunched them and for months they will be the most used memes.
The unmanageable elf wasn’t there on Saturday, in Cardiff, for William and Kate’s official duties, which instead involved the two older brothers. But he reappeared in the kitchen, a knead the sweets that the Dukes of Cambridge offered in Wales for one of their traditional street parties. It was like peeking into any little family, not the descendants of the most celebrated woman in the world.
The little anarchist has made converts among adults and has also converted the future king, Prince Charles himself, who on Saturday 4 June, the day of the grandiose Platinum Party, broke the boundaries of all formalism and with emotion he called Queen Elizabeth “mommy”who “laughs and cries with us and, above all, has been close to us in these 70 years”.
The sovereign was not there physically and was following the live broadcast from the living room of her castle. But it was as close as ever when, before the concert full of international stars, a witty video was broadcast in which he exchanged amusing jokes with Paddington Bearthe beloved character of English children’s literature created by Michael Bond.
The somewhat crazy and somewhat serious party in honor of the queen began on Sunday, with the Platinum Jubilee Pageant parade. Millions of little Union Jacks waved as the procession opened by the historic golden carriage, the Gold State Coachfollowed by beyond ten thousand people among soldiers, dancers, musicians, circus performers, flag wavers, actors and volunteers, in front of Buckingham Palace. For the royals, including the queen, stands had been set up. A fun show. Yes, perhaps for adults. Not for the spoiler Louis, who more than any other issue presented by street artists has again captured world attention all by himself. He sulked bored, squawked and silenced his mother Kate who was trying to put him back in line, he mockingly duetted with his uncle sitting behind him, took off his jacket, went into his grandfather Carlo’s arms, then into the arms of dad William, then he went back to his mum to kiss her very tenderly. He brought the show to the stands. And the show was just that typical mix of the royal family, made of rituality and confusion together.
The last goodbye to the adoring crowd was again on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, but the elf was not right next to the great-grandmother this time. A little to the side, as he waved goodbye to everyone below her, he must have thought with envy of her that he had had tea with Paddington.
The Platinum Jubilee has been celebrated and we don’t know if there will be any other big holidays like this. Louis, his faces and his nice anarchy, on the other hand, will accompany us for quite a while.
