The police are back in Rome hospitals, the doctors are satisfied: “An important signal”

“A good deterrent for those who, instead of seeking treatment, go to hospitals to beat up the doctors”. The president of the Order of Doctors of Rome, Antonio Magi, is satisfied with the decision of the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to reactivate 18 police units in hospitals in the capital and in some municipalities in the metropolitan area, Anzio, Neptune and Civitavecchia.

«This choice is an important signal that arises not only in sign of attention towards us but also with the desire to involve the police in situations which, in the event of violence against healthcare workers, require an official report”, explains Magi to the agency To say. «Therefore, the law exists but is rarely applied, probably because it is poorly known by the operators. With the presence of the police, all this will certainly become easier.

One in three nurses has been attacked

Cases of violence against health care workers are increasingly frequent. According to the latest Inail data, in 5 years, from 2016 to 2020, there were 12,000 occupational accidents for healthcare personnel recorded as violence, assaults and threats, with an average of around 2,500 a year. Aggressions, both physical and verbal, strike on average in one year a third of nursestherefore about 130,000 cases, with an “undeclared” case not reported to Inail of about 125,000 cases a year.

75% of the time, it is women who are attacked. The latest cases concern a nurse on duty in the Di Venere hospital in Bari, kicked by a patient who, in the emergency room, demanded to be seen immediately despite having a slight wound to a finger and a green code, and a young specializing in General Surgery, victim of the raptus of a companion (who tried to strangle her) of the patient she was visiting, while she was on duty in the Medical Guard of the Gervasutta hospital in Udine.

For some time, health professionals have been asking for more protection. For this reason, the new security plan has been set up: the principals will remain operational from Monday to Saturday, from 8 to 20with an operator for each shift and with the possibility of extending the service hours until 11pm. In the evening and at night, a surveillance service will in any case be ensured with the radios of the police forces.

«We certainly cannot think of putting policemen everywhere, but I hope that all of this can be implemented further, as I suggested» concludes Magi, «even at polyclinics and general practitioners’ clinics, with the help of cameras and applications that the same healthcare professional who is under threat or a victim of violence can activate in a moment of difficulty”.
