Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski is open to US nuclear weapons in his country.
“If the Americans asked us to store US nuclear weapons in Poland, we would be open to that. It would greatly enhance deterrence against Moscow,” the nationalist Conservative politician told Welt am Sonntag.
At the moment, this question does not arise, “but that may change soon.” The initiative should come from the Americans, he said. But in principle, it makes sense to expand nuclear involvement in NATO’s east wing.
Five weeks ago, Russia launched an offensive against neighboring Ukraine, which also borders Poland, notes Handelsblatt.
According to Kaczynski, Poland would also welcome an increase in the US presence in Europe from the current 100,000 troops to 150,000, due to Russia’s growing aggression. He estimates that 75,000 of these troops should be stationed on the east side, on the border with Russia, and 50,000 in the Baltic states and Poland alone. He said: “America’s nuclear forces are the strongest deterrent to Russian attacks on NATO countries and they provide us with the greatest security.”
