From this set, 6,089,620 were citizens of foreign countrieswhich is a 10.5% increase compared to January 1, 2022. According to the public agency, foreigners now represent 12.7% of the resident population in Spain.
One of the reasons for this increase is the war in Ukrainewhich prompted hundreds of thousands of people to leave that country: 83,401 Ukrainian citizens settled in Spain last year, which is almost the equivalent of the number of Ukrainians already living in the country.
Apart from Ukrainians, Spain welcomed 142,391 nationals from Colombia, 64,498 from Venezuela. Last year, by contrast, the country lost 9,742 Romanian nationals and 7,328 British nationals. The foreigners with the largest population in Spain remain Moroccans, with 893,953 nationals, followed by Romanians (629,755), Colombians (453,911), Italians (301,791) and British (284,037).
