The Power Of The Dog, the most recent Netflix movie, just premiered in the southern United States on October 26 and although there is still a little less than a week to go before it reaches Latin America, the film has already received the best reviews from experts in the world of entertainment.
Benedict Cumberbatch is the protagonist of this story, which takes place in Montana during 1925 and follows the story of the Burbank brothers, Phil and George, played by Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons, respectively. They are both very different, but their relationship is further complicated by the arrival of a woman and her son.
Phil is a rancher who raises cattle and is the clear representation of toxic masculinity, while George is a refined man and renowned gentleman with money. The problem between the two is not born by their brotherhood, but by George’s marriage to Rose and her son Peter, played by Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-Mcphee.
According to early screenings, Phil’s character psychologically tortures Rose and Peter’s for much of the film, so much so that the most intense and exasperating scenes arrive without the need for dialogue between each part, giving Cumberbatch the opportunity to give life to a mean and terrible character.
Phil is a tough man. He is an alpha male who had a passionate affair in his youth, which he can never speak of. Tragedy is what drives him to toxic masculinity, born out of the anguish, punishment, and hatred in the world. Even so, it is difficult to see the film through a modern lens. Phil is lonely, frowning, and full of pain, but he doesn’t feel disgusted with himself. In Montana, on the open plains, you have privacy.
Directed by Jane Campion, who had previously gained recognition for The piano and Portrait of a ladyThis film is very different from the ones used by the successful filmmaker. Based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, The Power Of The Dog, it is full of turbulent sexuality and suspense.
The film is clearly a complex way of approaching masculinity. I think it is a solid sample to think and rethink about the men of this world. I see this film as a separation from my other films, but maybe it is a good ending for ‘The Piano’. This is another great panoramic film that explores the myth of masculinity.
This exciting, daring and ambitious project has already received critical acclaim, so much so that it is believed that it could be the perfect opportunity for Cumberbatch, Smit-Mcphee and Dunst to win the Oscars for Best Leading and Supporting Actors in 2022. The Power Of The Dog will hit Netflix on November 11.
