Guatemalan President Alejandro Yamatey visited Ukraine yesterday Monday, where he met with his counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, who thanked him for “his support for the policy of sanctions against Russia”.
After Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Mr. Yamatey closed the Guatemalan embassy in Moscow.
“I am happy that Guatemala is ready to participate in promoting the initiative to create a special court to try the crimes committed by Russia against the Ukrainian people,” Mr. Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv.
The general secretariat of communications of the Guatemalan presidency did not release any details about the duration of Mr. Yamate’s visit.
The Central American state exports nickel to Ukraine, from which it imports iron and steel. Despite the severance of diplomatic relations, Guatemala continues to export coffee and bananas to Russia and to import fertilizers, medical supplies and paper.
The invitation to visit Ukraine was addressed in June, in a telephone conversation between the two presidents. Mr Yamatei said Mr Zelensky urged him to go see “with his own eyes the damage that Ukraine is suffering” and “tell the whole world” about it, according to Guatemala’s AGN news agency.
