Swiss prosecutors confirmed today that Mr Israeli President Isaac Herzog was the subject of criminal charges during his visit to the World Economic Forum in Davosas Israel itself is accused of committing war crimes in Gauze.
“Criminal complaints will be dealt with according to the usual procedure“, the Swiss Attorney General's Office said, adding that it would contact the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs to examine the issue of his immunity.
The Swiss Attorney General's Office did not disclose details of the type or number of complaints or who filed them.
A spokesman for Herzog's office and a spokesman for the Israeli government and foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Herzog spoke at the World Economic Forum yesterday, Thursday, where he called on the international community to reject genocide allegations leveled against Israel.
Herzog said last week that there is no “nothing more heinous and absurd” from the appeal filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
In presenting its case, South Africa named Herzog and other Israeli officials who it says expressed genocidal intent against Palestinians.
The Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which began after a bloody attack by Palestinian militants in southern Israel on October 7, has displaced most of the enclave's 2.3 million residents and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.
