The president of Portugal in the Azores after the continuous earthquakes

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza traveled to the Azores island of Sao Jorge today to send a message of “peace and tranquility” to the local population, in the face of the danger of a volcanic eruption following a series of small earthquakes.

“Citizens need to keep their cool,” he said during a brief visit to the island, one of nine counts in the Azores archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic, 1,600km from the mainland. .

“There is no reason to be in a state of alarm that the current conditions do not justify,” he added.

Since the start of this “seismic crisis”, which began last weekend, the Azores Seismic-Volcanic Surveillance Center has recorded more than 14,000 vibrations, which have not caused any damage.

About 200 of these quakes were felt by residents and the strongest of them, recorded on March 19, had a magnitude of 3.3.
