The head of the state of Senegal and the current president of the African Union, Maki Sal, expressed his intention to go to Ukraine in Accra on Saturday, after his visit to Russia yesterday, where he had talks with his Russian counterpart. Vladimir Putin.
“Yes (…), I will also go to Kyiv. It is important that we contribute to the return of peace,” Mr Sal told reporters as he attended a meeting of the Economic Community of West African States. The Senegalese president did not elaborate.
Mr Sal was received by Mr Putin in Sochi (southern Russia) on Friday. He asked him, on behalf of the African states, to “keep in mind that our countries (…) are victims of this economic crisis”.
He referred to the exclusion of cereals, as African countries are heavily dependent on exports from Russia and Ukraine, as well as shortages of fertilizers. He said Western sanctions on Russia were exacerbating the impact of the crisis on African countries and called for the agri-food sector to be exempt from sanctions. He said he was “reassured” by his talks with Mr Putin.
Announcing Mr. Sal’s visit to Russia, the Senegalese presidency had spoken of a forthcoming speech via video conference of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at an African Union summit, but not during a visit by the head of state to Kyiv.
