The president of the Russian energy giant Lukoil V. Alekperov has resigned

Vagid Alekperov has announced his resignation as chairman of Lukoil’s second-largest Russian oil company, according to Reuters.

Alekperov, who had served as deputy oil minister in the Soviet Union and was a staunch supporter of close ties between Russia and OPEC, also resigned from Lukoil’s board, the company said, without elaborating.

The 71-year-old Alekperov’s resignation comes after Britain last week imposed sanctions on Russian officials, freezing his assets and banning him from traveling.

Alekperov is the tenth richest Russian on the Forbes list, and according to a source close to him quoted by Reuters, he decided to leave Lukoil after being sanctioned in order to protect its operation.

It is worth noting that Lukoil last month called for an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine as soon as possible, expressing “strong concern about the tragic events.”
