The pride of being able to be proud

Celebrating the pride of being who you are and having the privilege of being alive should be two basic rights of every human being. But for those in the community LGBTQIAP+ they are two tireless fights that gain another taste when you can actually be who you always wanted to be.

June is pride month. Not that just one month is enough to focus on the importance of this flag, but that’s when eyes turn to this cause and it’s time to reinforce the importance of asserting your rights. Rights that should last for a whole year and for a lifetime.

Rights that began to be requested in the cries of revolt of Stonewall , in New York, when in 1969 people from a gay bar in the city took to the streets to protest against harassment and police violence against the community. Then, June 28 became International LGBT Pride Day and June became Pride Month.

Since 1969, a lot has changed. Rights have been conquered but the fight for respect and pride without discrimination continues… It continues beyond the colors of the flag, beyond the festivities celebrating that pride, it continues far beyond propaganda.

Even if you are not part of the LGBTQIAP+ community, this fight is yours too. It’s a fight for a better society and it’s a fight for the lives of people who just want the right to be who they are and how they want.

We only change a society when we get out of our own bubble, look at the neighbor’s grass and understand that it also needs our attention and that it’s no use if your garden is beautiful and the neighbor’s is dry because that won’t make the street more beautiful, while all the gardens are not in bloom.

So not just this month, but all year round. Not only on Avenida Paulista but on your street, in your building, in your condominium, at your work… be proud along with those who are proud. Without taking anyone’s place of speech but being empathetic and human with such an important cause. Don’t just water your garden, huh?
