The priest-engineer of Google who claimed that artificial intelligence acquired emotions

A Google engineer who was forced to take paid leave After claiming that one of the company’s artificial intelligence systems, LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) has gained consciousness and feelings, he says he supported the claim in his Christian faith.

Blake Lemon, 41, posted excerpts from a conversation with the company’s LaMDA claiming that the AI tool had become sensitive.

Now, Lemon says that LaMDA allegations come from his experience as a “Christian priest” and accuse Google of religious discriminationaccording to the NY Post.

“When the LaMDA claimed to have a soul and then was able to eloquently explain what it meant, I had to give it the benefit of the doubt,” Lemon wrote on Twitter late Monday. “Who am I to tell God where he can and where he can not put souls?”

In a subsequent blog post on Tuesday, he recounted a conversation with LaMDA that led him to believe he had become an emotional being.

“What really became interesting was when LaMDA started talking to me about his feelings and soul,” he wrote.

Whenever Lemon asked LaMDA how he knew he had feelings and soul, he wrote that he would provide a variation of “because I’m human and that ‘s exactly how I feel.”

The engineer added that he wanted to develop experiments that could lead to a “formal scientific theory of consciousness” but that the Google prevented him from doing so.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Lemon said he was not able to give an immediate interview to NY Post until he returned from a trip next week.

Other researchers artificial intelligence rejected his claims, arguing that artificial intelligence systems such as LaMDA simply mimic human speech based on vast amounts of data.

Lemoine describes himself as an AI researcher, software engineer, priest, father, veteran, ex-convict, according to his blog. Joined Google in 2015, according to his LinkedIn profile.
