“The Prince of Ice”: the unknown infant buried with a golden cross and a sword

A boy with blue eyes, buried more than 1,300 years ago in southern Germany, was found to have been buried with impressive offenses – among them a tiny sword, silk clothes and a golden cross. According to new analysis, the child came from a wealthy local family and died of infection at the tender age of 18 months. The remains of the child, named after the archaeologists “Prince of Ice”, were found in 2021 near the city of Mattsies, Bavaria. Its nickname is due to the unique method followed: the researchers immediately frozen its grave with liquid nitrogen to excavate the whole as a single block, without disturbing its valuable content. The stone -built burial chamber was found in the ruins of a Roman villa, which appears to have been reused as a child’s burial.
