Berlin is making changes to the current Ethereum Proof-of-Work network to adapt it, while work continues on the full deployment of the Ethereum 2.0 blockchain, using Proof-of-Stake as a consensus mechanism.
It was assumed that the update will be launched in June 2020, but this did not happen due to the high dependence of the network nodes on the basic Ethereum client – Geth. The developers then came to the conclusion that a bug in the client could lead to the failure of most of the network and began to urge node owners to switch to alternative clients. The situation has not noticeably improved since then. Subsequently, the hard fork was postponed several more times, and the final activation date was set for the current month, after the successful launch of the zero phase of Ethereum 2.0 in December 2020.
The developers spent this time on finalizing the EIP. The final version included five EIPs, providing for modifications to gas handling methods, improvements for the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) and transactions.
By now, most of the customer development teams have completed preparations for Berlin, so the update can be activated at any time. However, the block number for its launch has not yet been approved, and therefore, the exact date remains unknown.
