The proposed 3.5% target for defense spending is not reasonable for Belgium, says Foreign Minister Prevo

It would not be reasonable for Belgium to increase defense spending to 3.5% of gross domestic product, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxim Prevo told Reuters today, after NATO chief made a proposal to adopt a new defense target. NATO Secretary -General Mark Rutte suggested alliance members to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP and to commit an additional 1.5% to wider security -related costs to satisfy US President Donald’s demand. “To be honest, today it is already painful to reach 2%,” said Prevo, referring to NATO’s current goal for spending, which Belgium seeks to achieve this year. “We will do it, this is a crystal clear commitment of the Belgian government,” he said.
