The province’s economy shows a greater setback than in the 2008 crisis

The Institute of Economic Studies of the Province of Alicante (Ineca) has presented this morning the new Socioeconomic Situation Report of the province of Alicante corresponding to the second quarter of 2020. Its vice president, Antonio Fernandez, explained that the damage suffered in the business and social fabric is evident. This decline in the province is within a generalized framework of slowing down and weakening the national and international economy. Fernandez has pointed out that the global figures are negative as a whole derived from the paralysis of the activity caused by the health and economic crisis derived from the covid19.

Proof of this is the INECA indicator -which analyzes the socioeconomic situation of the province- where in the 2nd quarter reflects the worst result of the series that we started in 2008. Not even in the worst moments of the previous crisis, did the indicator show such a negative decline. On that occasion, the negative values had their lowest with a score of -8.3 in the first quarter of 2009. Currently, the indicator shows a value of -16.1. With these values, it is easy to understand that the scope of this crisis is more intense than the previous one, and we still do not know what the final scope and its possible temporal extension will be.

For his part, the Director of Studies at INECA, Francisco Llopis, has indicated that the province of Alicante it goes back to the values it showed in 2015. It is a new starting point for the social and economic recovery of the province of Alicante. Llopis has added that this situation is common to the rest of the territories, so the efforts made allow companies from Alicante to take advantage of their competitors.

Fernandez has emphasized that not all sectors have been affected equally and the economic crisis derived from the Covid pandemic19 it is affecting in a special way tourism, hospitality, small businesses, leisure and culture.

The vice president of INECA has recognized that one of the great problems of the province is precisely the unemployment. In this regard, Llopis has stressed that the high unemployment rate forces us to maintain it as the highest social priority in the province that must be taken into account in political measures.

The Director of Studies has added that the next report will better reflect the scope of the crisis as mobility and productive activity have recovered and the resistance of the business fabric will be verified after several months under pressure.

The vice president of INECA has concluded his intervention explaining that the province of Alicante is a diversified territory although with a high dependence on tourism. For this reason, Fernández requests greater recognition to Alicante companies and especially those related to tourism -intensive in jobs- because the province needs aid to the sectors most affected by the situation -of a fiscal nature , among others – to keep the fabric productive.
