According to the North Wales police, the attacker introduced himself to the victim with a high -ranking employee of the British police and announced the need to check the legitimacy of her crypto assets, allegedly as part of an investigation of a criminal offense.

The fraudster demanded from the victim of immediate actions, threatening it with legal consequences. Under this pretext, he convinced the owner of the cryptocurrency to convey access to the digital assets stored on his hardware device. The pseudo -police received 42.8 bitcoin, which at the time of theft was equivalent to $ 2.8 million, after which he transferred them to controlled addresses.

At this stage of the investigation, it is assumed that the personal data of the victims could be compromised as a result of the leak, which allowed the attacker to carry out a “narrowly focused and sophisticated scam”. Now the Cybercrime Department of Cybercrime Police of North Wales is trying to go to the fraudster and track the movement of stolen crypto assets.

Earlier, CTM360 cybersecurity experts said the scammers began to kidnap cryptocurrency with the help of the Spican program Sparkkitty, which is distributed by attackers through fake stores on the Tiktok platform.
