The #QuieroCorredor movement observes “slow progress” in the Mediterranean axis

The construction of the Mediterranean Corridor continues its course with “slow progress” and some important “milestones” in the last year such as the launch of the AVE Granada-Antequera, the placement of the third lane between Castellón and Alicante -which allows AVE trains to circulate between both cities- and the start-up of the Vandellós bypass in Tarragona, which has eliminated the existing bottleneck between Valencia and Barcelona.

This is shown by the Second Semi-Annual Check-up that has been carried out for the #QuieroCorredor movement which has been presented this Thursday at the Business Act for the Mediterranean Corridor held in Valencia. This movement, promoted by the Valencian Association of Entrepreneurs Four years ago it claimed that the final route -from Algeciras to France- be concluded in 2025.

During the meeting, both the businessmen and the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Jose Luis balos, who participated in one of the round tables, agreed on the need to take advantage of European reconstruction funds to promote this railway axis.

Specific, the president of AVE, Vicente Boluda, has urged the Government to “put the batteries” to accelerate the Mediterranean Corridor and “reactivate” Spain after the Covid-19 pandemic. Minister à ?? balos has agreed that these funds are a “great opportunity” to give it a “strong boost” and has promised to “make an effort” to try to complete the works in 2025. By 2021, the PGE plan to dedicate 1,982 to it. million euros, he pointed out.

The ‘check-up’ on the current state of the Mediterranean Corridor points out as the “greatest delays” or “most worrying red lights” those sections ‘no date’ such as: the placement of the third rail and the electrification of the Antequeras-Algeciras road, which is still under construction; the Lorca-Pulpà section; the completion of the works on the Beniel-Murcia high-speed line; or the Murcia-Cartagena connection.

In the Valencian Community, the significant delay is observed in the works of the third lane of the Encina and Alicante, the new platform of the Castellón-ValÚncia AVE high-speed train and the passing tunnel, of which the dates are unknown.

Where there is a date, the report points out, it is in the Elche-Monforte-Orihuela connection by AVE, although the works were scheduled to end in 2020 “it is clear that it will not happen.”

For 2022 there are two important actions: the works of the AVE Monforte-Murcia and the change from Iberian gauge to international gauge between Tarragona and Castellón, as well as the Murcia-AlmerÃa section that should be completed in 2023.

SHORT TERM

For the next few months, short-term commitments, between 2021 and 2023, mark: the completion of the expansion of the Castellbisbal and Martorell tunnels; the third lane of the Castellbisbal-Tarragona section; change the route between Tarragona and Castellón to international gauge; and a third lane between Castellón and ValÚncia.

The projects of the ValÚncia passing tunnel and the new platform of the ValÚncia-Castellón high-speed train must also be presented to the public; put into operation the only road between Xà tiva and La Encina; start the works of the third Alicante-La Encina; and connect the city of Elche with Alicante airport.

Other commitments for the next two years are to bury the AVE routes in the city of Murcia; start work on the definitive project for the Murcia-Cartagena line and those that will link the Totana and Lorca-Pulpà sections; and the tender project between AlmerÃa and Granada.
