The “real Indiana Jones” discovered a lost Mayan city after 30 years

The Slovenian archaeologist Ivan Šprajc, described by the Guardian as “the real Indiana Jones”, after 30 years of excavations managed to discover a lost city of Mayanin which it is estimated that 40,000 people lived.

In accordance with BBC it’s Chactún, dating back to the 8th century, located deep within Mexico’s Balamkú Conservation Area.

The archaeologist named the site Ocomtún (stone column in the Mayan dialect of the Yucatan Peninsula) after the many cylindrical columns that were scattered throughout the
settlement.

Ceramic finds examined from the site indicate that Ocomtún was probably inhabited between 600 and 800 AD and was also mysteriously abandoned.

“These cities were lost in time. No one knew exactly where they were,” he said.

At the same time, he stated that “it (Ocomtún) was actually the last great “black hole” on the archeological map of the central Maya Peninsula (the modern central Yucatan Peninsula). There was nothing there. There was not a single known site in an area spanning about 3,000-4,000 square kilometers.”
