Between deserts, beaches in Greece and small towns in Italy, check out the locations of the top Oscar nominated films of 2022:
“Attack of the Dogs”
With 12 Oscar nominations, including the most sought-after categories, director Jane Campion’s film is set in the 1920s in rural Montana, western U.S. The plot follows the story of brothers Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons), who own a ranch together. George finds his true love in Rose (Kirsten Dunst), and Phil proceeds to attack both her and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
Among the themes of love, grief, envy, resentment and sexuality, the whimsical scenarios also draw attention. But the interesting thing is that, even though it was set in Montana, the film was shot entirely in New Zealand, the director’s birthplace. According to the film’s official IMDB page and the local press“Attack of the Dogs” was filmed in the plains of Maniototopart of the region of Otagosoutheastern portion of the country’s south island.
The climate of the locality is severe and dry: the thermometers reach 30°C in the middle of the summer and up to -15°C in the winter. Slightly populated, the region has sheep farming as its main source of income. Other film sets include the coastal towns of Dunedin and oamaruwith indoor scenes also recorded in auckland.
“Dune”
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film is up for 10 Oscars, including “Best Picture” and “Best Special Effects.” Released in theaters in 2021 and available on the HBO Max streaming service, the fiction follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), whose family takes control of the desert planet Arrakis – a place that is the source of a rare and important spice for history.
Conspiracies, prophecies and destruction dictate the course of the film in the midst of desert scenarios. For this, the team chose to shoot scenes in four main locations: the Wadi Rum desert, in Jordan; O desert around Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates; The northwest coast of norway and closed studios in Budapestin Hungary.
In an interview for Condé Nast Traveler, the film’s production designer, Patrice Vermette, said he was looking for a desert that wasn’t quite as romantic, but was a little scary. Because they have many rock formations and are composed of extremes, the deserts of Wadi Rum and Wadi Araba, in Jordan, were chosen.
Described as wonderful but at the same time inhospitable, both played an important role in the creation of the planet Arrakis. “There is a presence there, an aura. You feel really, really, really small in the universe when you’re there, and the sound of the wind between the rocks is breathtaking.”
Even so, a desert with large dunes was also necessary, and the choice was based on the sands around Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. The team even chose the luxury hotel Qasr Al Sarab, part of the Anantara group, to settle in the middle of the desert. “Traveling from the hotel to the desert filming location was just walking out the door of the resort. It was fantastic,” Vermette said.
In northwest Norway, the coast of kråkenes was used to give life on the big screen to the planet Caladan, totally different from Arrakis. Interestingly, part of the year, more specifically between the months of November and December, the region has only a few hours of sunlight. The opposite occurs between the end of spring and summer, when daylight comes to bar the night for days.
“Belfast”
Despite the film’s title directing the viewer directly to the capital of northern irelandthe semi-autobiographical feature by director Kenneth Branagh had most of the scenes shot in the surroundings of Londonat England.
Nominated for seven statuettes and with a strong cast, which includes Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe and newcomer Jude Hill, the dramatic comedy tells the story of a nine-year-old boy who sees his life turned upside down with civil unrest in Northern Ireland’s capital in the late 1960s. The film’s black-and-white visuals also contribute to a vintage aesthetic amid the prickly suits.
Due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19, most of the film was filmed on the outskirts of London, as in an abandoned schoolhouse that was transformed into the school, hospital and church seen in the drama. Farnborough Airport, in the English town of the same name in the county of Hampshire, was also used in certain key scenes, with hangars being used to create other environments.
Scenes were also shot in Belfast itself, where the film is set, as well as in residential neighborhoods around the city. For tourists, the city has a busy cultural life, such as the “Titanic Belfast”, the same place where the Titanic was designed, built and launched in 1912, which tells the whole story of the ship, as well as the “Game of Thrones” studios, opened in early February.
“The Lost Daughter”
The first film directed by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, the Netflix drama stars Oscar-winner Olivia Colman as the protagonist Leda, a college professor who is on vacation at Greece. In all, the feature was nominated in three categories: “Best Actress” for Colman’s work; “Best Supporting Actress” for Jessie Buckley and “Best Adapted Screenplay”.
In the plot, the character Leda becomes obsessed with a young mother (Dakota Johnson) while being bombarded by memories of her past as a young mother struggling to raise two daughters.
The original scenarios would take place on a calm beach in the United States, however, due to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the production chose the Greek island of Spetses located on the Attica peninsula in Greece. Small and charming, the island can be discovered on foot or by bicycle and can be explored in just one day.
According to the National Tourism Organization of Greece, the island has well-preserved mansions and horse-drawn carriages through the picturesque cobblestone streets are a common ride. The old port and Dapia are the hallmarks of Spetses: it is the tourist and commercial center where the island’s entertainment pulses.
“007 – No Time to Die”
The 25th film in the 007 franchise opened in late 2021 in theaters and brought Daniel Craig in his final act as agent James Bond. The film was nominated for three categories: “Best Sound”, “Visual Effects” and “Original Song”. In the plot, in addition to, once again, Bond having to save the world from the hands of villains, stunning scenarios around the Earth help to compose the narrative.
Matera, commune in southern Italy, was chosen to be the location of the film’s opening scenes. One of the oldest cities in the world, the locality has buildings carved into rocks, very cinematic alleys and even ruins of a village from the Neolithic period.
To the Condé Nast Traveler, director Cary Fukunaga said filming in Italy was like a dream. “We shot in Matera, in Gravina, in Puglia, and in that small strip of coastline that Basilicata has between Campania and Calabria, in Sapri. It was very beautiful,” he said.
THE Jamaica also played an important role in the film. It was in the country, in the region around Port Antonio, that the character James Bond settled in a villa after leaving MI6. According to the director, the house does not exist in real life, but was built entirely for the seaside movies.
Cuba is also one of the countries visited by the main character during the film, but only in fiction: buildings, houses and elements of the city of Santiago de Cuba were built from scratch at Pinewood Studios, one of the largest British film studios located about 30 km from the central London.
In addition to Italy and England, other European countries also made a point of production. It is the case of Atlantic road in Norway, part of a country highway that is 8.3 km long and crosses an archipelago – the beautiful scenery mixes with the giant waves that hit the bridges during bad weather. a lake in Scotland was used to bring a fjord to life in fiction and a sequence full of woods was shot in the Windsor Great Parkin the south of the city of Windsor, England.
