A “coordinated, elegant” change of government is no longer considered self -evident, not even for European states. Both the new Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and his predecessor, Olf Saltz, have repeatedly referred to the foundations and quality of German democracy, as it has been recently. And yet. A few hours earlier, Mr Mertz had suffered an unprecedented humiliating defeat in the first Bundestag vote and, despite the fact that his election was not in practice at stake, everyone – in and out of Germany – had realized the seriousness of the strike that the new government received.
