The new revised master plan of the Piraeus Port Authority, which is expected to unblock the project of the new cruise pier at the port, was updated by the Ports Planning and Development Committee (ESAL).
The new port development plan, which includes the Strategic Environmental Impact Study, is expected to be sent to the Council of State for approval while the relevant presidential decree is expected to be issued.
Afterwards, new permits are expected to be submitted by the PPA for the continuation of the project, in order for the work to resume normally.
It is noted that the decision of the CoE has not affected the rest of the Organization’s mandatory works resulting from the concession contract to Cosco Group Limited, but only the construction of the new cruise pier, a project that was in progress.
The construction company TEKAL has been declared the contractor of the specific project which belongs to the mandatory investments
The new pier has a length of approximately 1,510 meters and variable depth from -19 to -29.50 meters, while the creation of two berths for cruise ships with a length of 390 meters and 350 meters respectively is foreseen.
At the moment, the projects in progress at the Piraeus Port Authority are the extension of the Car Handling Station (Herakleos), the underground road connection of the Car Handling Station with the Former Space of the ODDY and the improvement of the infrastructure of the Shipyard Repair Zone in Perama.
The procedure followed to update the Piraeus port development plan by ESAL was denounced in a statement by the mayor of Keratsiniou-Drapetsonas, Christos Vrettakos, who left the meeting.
“Today ESAL (Ports Planning and Development Committee) held a meeting to approve Cosco’s Master Plan, which it had approved again in 2019, writing on its old shoes the decision of the CoE. ESAL and the government do not implement not even the law they passed, proceeding with a presidential decree that will permit Cosco’s projects without any consultation, without an approved EIA as mandated by the CoE.” says Mr. Vrettakos.
He also emphasized that “the projects that will burden the lives of the people of the city will not proceed”, adding that “regardless of the government’s decisions, they will be prevented by the struggles of the residents and by resorting to Justice”.
