The Toyota AE86 electric concept car isn’t a new vehicle, it just took Lexus’s electrification technology and added components from the Tundra and Prius hybrid vehicles. The result was an old car from the 80s, only with an electric motor and a battery of a rather small capacity. This means that the user, with all the desire, will not be able to drive this car quickly or for a long time – the engine produces only 48 horsepower, and the battery from the Prius is definitely not enough for a long trip on the motorway.
However, the company simply demonstrated the ability to turn iconic cars into electric cars, on which, if desired, it is quite possible to drive around the city to work or go shopping, for example. Of course, it was not possible to realize the full-fledged experience of driving the legendary car, because it is impossible to switch gears, as well as hear the sound of the engine rumbling. But if the car enthusiast really needs it, the manufacturer introduced another version of the AE86, only on a hydrogen engine – this is the same power plant model as in the original car, only it was slightly upgraded to run on a different fuel.
Toyota said that a hydrogen-powered car gives absolutely the same emotions as a classic model, only without harmful emissions into the atmosphere – gear shifting on a manual gearbox, engine sound and vibration have not gone away. And although the manufacturer will probably never release serial versions of these updated cars for sale, the idea itself seems very attractive – there are plenty of classic vehicles in the world that, after switching to electricity, could easily win the hearts of potential buyers.
