The 2022 Oscars ceremony takes place this Sunday (27), in Los Angeles, United States. “A Beat of the Heart”, from Apple TV, is the favorite production for this year’s best picture award.
In Brazil, the feature is shown by Amazon Prime and tells the story of the daughter of a deaf couple torn between her love for music and the fear of abandoning her parents.
This year, the clash between streaming platforms and major studios, has weighty films competing for the night’s top prize. Netflix comes with two nominations: the long “Attack of the Dogs” and “Don’t Look Up”. Universal enters with “Belfast”. Warner Bros with “Dune”. And Disney with “Amor, Sublime Amor”.
The presence of streaming nominees is already predominant. Seven of the ten productions that compete for best film are available on platforms, and the rest can be viewed through rental or digital purchase.
“It is worth remembering that the first time a film from a streaming studio was nominated for an Oscar for best picture was in 2017, with “Manchester by the Sea”. It didn’t, but it was that historic landmark. And the other historic milestone happened during this pandemic. Theaters closed, the movement that was already natural for more and more people to join streaming exploded”, explains journalist and documentary filmmaker Flávia Guerra.
“Today we are certainly experiencing a dispute between major studios and streaming for this ballast that the Oscars give. And not only the ballast of the Oscars, but also our attention, the audience’s attention. Do we remember that “Dune” is from Warner Bros or do you remember that “Attack dos Dogs” is on Netflix?”, he continues.
