The richest 10% of the world’s population is responsible for two -thirds of global warming since 1990, according to a new study published in the Nature Climate Change scientific journal. Research, which combines economic data with simulations of climate models, is the first to quantify the contribution of concentrated private property to extreme weather. “We are connecting the carbon footprint of the most affluent people directly to the real impact on climate change,” explains the basic author of the study, Sarah Schoengart, a scientist at the ETH public University in Zurich. “We are no longer talking about carbon accounting anymore, but accountability against the climate crisis.” Research shows that 1% of the richest people in the world have contributed 26 times more than the average person to the heat -challenge that appears once a century, and 17 times more to the induction of drought in the Amazon.
