The risk of hospitalization from the Δ-strain of coronavirus is almost three times higher than from the “first” mutant

Coronavirus disease from the delta strain (formerly referred to in the media as “Indian”) leads to a significant increase in the risk of hospitalization. After checking cases with the disease from March 29 to May 20 and decrypting 38,805 samples of the virus genomes, this was the conclusion reached by British health care, according to a new report on the situation with COVID-19 in the country.

At the beginning of the 20th of May, the Δ variant of the coronavirus was responsible for half of all new infections in England (judging by the decoded genomes).

As of the end of May, this strain continues to epidemiologically crowd out “competitors” and now its spread is 73% of all tested samples in the country.

“For Delta cases versus Alpha cases (British strain, – ed.) there is a significantly increased – 2.61 times – the risk of hospitalization and getting into intensive care (1.67 times) within 14 days from the moment of sampling, “- said in the message.
