As the behind-the-scenes photography project for the then-Prince of Wales’ 70th birthday celebration came to an end, Jackson was called upon to capture Charles III’s family with his lens.
“I was keen to make everyone as relaxed as possible and inject an element of humor into the shoot. In preparation, I secured permission to do different things and bought a bear suit. I thought about trying it on my own son Theo when he was in the bath – but he got scared and burst into tears. I think he had pretty big teeth and I can see why he did that! So I had to rethink things quickly and, with a last-minute online purchase, I found a friendlier bear costume – and it had the desired effect,” Chris Jackson points out in his book, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
About the visit of Charles and his wife Camilla in 2016 to Adelaide and their photo shoot he explains: “They had these two koalas. Charles had the eldest, named Kaa, while the duchess had Matilda who was cute and edgy. They were slightly concerned as Prince Charles joked about their weak bladders and had diapers specially designed for them. It was a fun photo and a good example of the relaxed moments you get on royal tours.”
In the book “Charles III: A King and His Queen” he focuses on the big moments, but also on the quieter ones of King Charles and Queen Camilla. While some photos may be recognizable to the average royal fan, many are brand new.
“I hope the book gives an insight into their character” Jackson said, stressing that it was everyone’s common desire that the book be released by the coronation ceremony of King Charles III.
His favorite portrait of King Charles, he notes, was released late last year when it was announced that the monarch had become a ranger of Windsor Great Park. In the picture, King Charles is leaning against a 600-year-old tree in a historic park.
“I was reminded of the story that had taken place around this tree and added another little historical moment. You often have plans with photos like this, but they happen naturally and this was one of them,” he emphasizes.
