The Russian analogue of the “maize” made the first flight

In Russia, a program of flight tests of the light multi-purpose aircraft LMS-901 “Baikal” has begun. Today, on January 30, its first flight took place from the Aramil airfield in the Sverdlovsk region. About this writes the publication “RIA Novosti” with reference to the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov.

At the helm of the aircraft was test pilot first class Valentin Lavrentiev. He raised the aircraft to a height of about 500 meters, performed a series of maneuvers, including simulated approach, turn and landing. The operation of the main systems of the aircraft and its controllability were also checked. The flight duration was 25 minutes.

LMS-901 “Baikal” is a single-engine turboprop aircraft designed to replace the outdated An-2 (“Kukuruznik”). It was developed by Baikal-Engineering, a subsidiary of the Ural Civil Aviation Plant, commissioned and supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade as part of the state program for the development of small aircraft. Serial production of “Baikal” should begin in 2024.

Chief designer Vadim Demin noted that the aircraft is capable of speeds up to 300 km/h, and for its class, this is a very high speed. It is expected that its range will be 3 thousand kilometers, and with a maximum payload (2 tons) – 1.5 thousand kilometers. The Ministry of Industry and Trade stated that the wishes of the regions were taken into account when developing the aircraft. “Baikal” is intended for local airlines, including those with a severe climate. First of all, it will solve problems with ensuring transport accessibility in the Far East.
