The Russian doll Matrioska is Greek for the first time

The doll that expresses the absolute Russian soul and is called “Matrioska” was dressed in Greek clothes for the first time.

The Greek Matrioska was “born” these days in Moscow thanks to a 15-year-old, who took care to properly decorate the traditional doll.

In fact, the Greek Matrioska by Katerina Dimidou will take part in the exhibition “Mission Matryoshka” of the Museum of Applied Arts in the Russian capital, from May 21 to August 1. There, the Matrioska of 15-year-old Katerina will stand side by side with other Matrioskas from different nations of the Russian Federation, but also from Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, Vietnam and Greece.

«Matrioska is a favorite toy and an unforgettable souvenir associated with the Russian tradition. It is a wooden doll, which charms all people with its beauty“, Says the young student to the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency, explaining that Matrioska expresses the woman of all ages:” young girl, married woman, mother, grandmother “.

The Greek Matrioska of Katerina Dimidou is originally from Thessaly and when asked why she chose to dress Karagouna, the 15-year-old answers: “I searched hard enough to come up with an outfit that reminds all the elements of Greek folk costume and its character. Also be something loose, simple. That is why I chose Karagouna of central Greece, which I believe looks like other women in traditional costumes: Pontia, Thrakiotissa, Ipirotissa, Kritikia… “.

The 15-year-old was born in Greece, in Kilkis, where her parents returned, leaving Georgia years ago. They did not have time to settle in the new place, when the economic crisis broke out in Greece. So, they took the road of migration again with the then two-year-old Katerina, this time for Russia.

This year, Katerina is graduating from the Art School (s.s. is parallel to the basics of secondary education), but she does not intend to become a painter, as she says. “I like science and foreign languages, I read science fiction books. I also attend classes at the Music Conservatory. I participate in student Olympiads in biology and languages. I still do not know where I will end up “, he says and confesses to us that he would like to come to Greece to study at one of the Greek universities. In fact, she also wants to improve her knowledge of the Greek language, which she is learning with the help of Natalia Nikolaou, a well-known Greek language teacher in the Russian capital.

Stella Christianova, president of the Greek Association of Moscow “Elpida”, participated as an inspirer in the creation of the Greek Matrioska. “We were surprised by the good, creative and technical performance of the Greek Matrioska,” Ms. Christianova told APE-MPE. “Our great friends, the” Mission Charitable Foundation “, in the framework of the project” Matryoshka Mission “have added a Greek doll, a fact that makes us very happy”, he adds and reveals that a Matrioshka dressed in the traditional costume of Thessaly will is the mascot of the club, which has been active in Moscow since 2016.

Katerina Dimidou’s Matrioska is beautiful, sweet, cute. The base of her costume consists of a shirt decorated with embroidery on the cuffs, around the collar, on the hem and on the sleeves. With a pleated skirt decorated with embroidery along the leg, the traditional vest, a rectangular “lobe” and a belt with a large metal buckle tied around the waist. On the head, the Greek Matrioska wears a black handkerchief folded diagonally in half, so that the decorative corner hangs from the back. Gold pounds hang on the handkerchief, as well as from other parts of the costume.

Katerina also explains that she painted two identical dolls. The first doll will remain in the Foundation’s collection forever. The second, in the terms of the charity project “Mission Matryoshka”, will have to fulfill an important noble mission: “to find in such a small but at the same time huge world people who, like Matrioska with her incredible strength, patience and charity changed their lives by “serving” the good for their fellow man “.

This particular Greek Matrioska has no other means, such as this classic doll. “It was not in the terms of the project. But these two have to carry out a mission, they will leave, while I will do others for the Greek school, for the Association “Agapi”, which will have three other “brothers!”, Says the 15-year-old and to APE-MPE she promises to make Pontia Matrioska, who will look like her beautiful grandmother, as she characteristically says.
