The head of the Ministry of Digital Science Maksut Shadayev confirmed that by the end of 2022, a Russian electronic passport will be launched in three regions of Russia, which will be in the form of a smart card and an application with a QR code. The information was announced at a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications.
I really hope that by the end of next year, in three regions of the Russian Federation, we will be able to start issuing a new passport in these two types (smart card and application with a QR code), interconnected.

Back in 2019, former Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov first announced that Russians’ paper passports would be replaced with electronic ones, citing 2022 as the deadline for the transition. Later, the Ministry of Internal Affairs offered to issue electronic passports to residents of Moscow already from December 2021, but the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the imminent start of the procedure in July 2022. At the same time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will offer residents of the entire country, and not just the capital, to obtain an electronic identity card.
