The Russian Ministry of Justice has called for the dissolution of the Russian branch of the Jewish Agency, Russian media reported.
The Sohnut Jewish Agency, based in Jerusalem, is the largest Jewish non-profit organization in the world and helps Jews immigrate to Israel.
The Russian news agency Interfax reported that the Ministry of Justice asked the Basmani court in Moscow to dissolve the Jewish agency “Sohnut” because in its activities it violated Russian law.
The Israeli website Walla writes that Israel’s ambassador to Moscow, Alex Ben Zvi, last week met with Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, from whom he asked for clarification on the claims of the Russian authorities to the Sokhnut news agency.
Recently the newspaper The Jerusalem Post wrote, citing a related document, that the Russian government asked “Sohnut” to stop its activities in the country.
According to open sources, the international organization “Jewish Agency for Israel ‘Schonut'”, which deals with securing ties between Jews around the world, as well as repatriation issues, was founded in 1929. Branches of “Schonut” operate in Russia since 1989.
