To be able to complete the pregnancy and give birth to the baby she had wanted so much, Azzurra Carnelos has suspended cancer treatment. A sacrifice for love, which cost her her life: the 34-year-old originally from Oderzo, in the province of Treviso, died on Sunday 14 April, leaving behind her husband Francesco Favero and her eight-month-old baby Antonio.
Azzurra Carnelos she had already fought breast cancer in 2019. After chemotherapy, the disease seemed to have been overcome: the young woman and her husband started making plans again, including that of becoming parents. «Already at the time, her first concern was that she wouldn't be able to become a mother», explains her husband to Corriere del Veneto. «We got married on June 2, 2022 and at the beginning of 2023 we discovered we were expecting a child.”
It was a happy time, until a visit in July revealed that the tumor had returned, in the form of secondary lesions. «We have started treatments compatible with the state of pregnancy in order to reach the 32nd week of gestation. Azzurra's only thought was the child that was growing inside her: she gritted her teeth and smiled”, recalls Francesco, who has always been at her side: when the illness flared up again, he left his job to be close to her, accompanying her to the Iov (Veneto Oncology Institute) for therapies and bring her home, transmitting strength and energy. Azzurra resumed treatment after the birth of the baby, but by then it was too late.
As explained by Dr. Antonella Brunello, director of the Oncology 1 unit of the IOV in Padua, «Pregnancy is a phase in which tumors present themselves with more aggressive characteristics. Where possible, we try to safeguard the well-being of both the unborn child and the mother.”
Azzurra had been a model student, graduating from the University of Udine with honors. She then immediately found a job in a bank. Her loved ones remember her as «intelligent, polite, studious, kind to everyone, attached to family and friends. She always thanked doctors and nurses and she has never been angry, not even in this last period». All the donations collected during the ceremony will be allocated to the neonatal intensive care unit of the Cà Foncello hospital in Treviso.
