A new beta version of the Samsung Internet browser v18 was released, one of the key innovations in which was the option of recognizing text on images – it can be selected to translate or copy, as well as share it with the sharing function. The catch is that this innovation is only available for devices running One UI 4.1.1 firmware (based on Android 12). It is also not clear whether this feature is really exclusive to Samsung devices, or whether it is available for any gadgets with Android 12.
To select text in an image, just call the context menu by long holding your finger and select the Extract text option. After that, the browser will highlight the recognized characters that can be selected. So far, it is not clear whether there is a language limit – the system definitely recognizes English, but the availability of support for the same Russian and others is unknown.
Other innovations include improved display of the toolbar. It can be either at the bottom of the screen or at the top near the search bar – it depends on the screen size. The bottom position will be activated on typical smartphone models, and the top position on large screen gadgets like tablets and foldable devices.
Among other things, Samsung Internet v18 Beta improved anti-tracking technologies (methods like CNAME are no longer scary) and switched to HTTPS by default.
