Olaf Scholz’s government has agreed that Germany should adopt the “security package”, the new, tougher framework for immigration and asylum. Among other things, the new legislation provides for strengthening the powers of the police, stricter gun rules regarding knives, measures to prevent Islamist crimes and a reduction in irregular immigration. In sporting events, festivals, markets, exhibitions and other open gatherings, as well as in public transport, carrying a knife will be prohibited. In an attempt to reduce incentives to migrate to Germany, there will no longer be social benefits for refugees who are already registered in another EU country – provided that country accepts their return to it. Especially for asylum seekers and immigrants who commit crimes, deportation will become much easier, while the protection status will be withdrawn in case the person concerned travels to his country without a serious reason.
