The school does not reopen: students, parents and teachers protest

Parents, pupils and teachers protest together. All against distance learning and against the uncertainty about the return to class of high school students. If elementary and middle school children and young people have been in school since 7 January, the older ones have not yet returned and school activity has resumed with the dad.

The first day of school after the Christmas holidays was a day of protest. The committee will lead it Priority to school, which organized sit-ins for 19 cities, from Salerno to Padua.

There have also been many individual initiatives such as that of a philosophy teacher from Faenza who stays in her school even at night. “To show that we really want to stay in school, and be safe there,” he explained.

The goal is to go back to class and do it safely. The government had talked about 75% of pupils in the classroom after the holidays, the percentage dropped to 50% and the start was postponed to Monday 11 January (only in Trentino Alto Adige the return has already taken place). All signs that do not encourage and that get worse. Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, but also Marche, Calabria and Sardinia, have postponed the opening at the beginning of February, Lombardy has announced an ordinance to continue with distance learning at least until 24 January. Same date for Campania. Piedmont and Puglia should return on the 18th.

The voice of the protests throughout Italy was unanimous. «Dad is not school», «School is cured, it does not close». In Naples, parents told of a year with only 15 days in attendance for their children. “We wanted to emphasize that those who pay for the cultural crisis are always those who pay for the economic crisis,” he explains Chiara Ponzini, of the Milanese committee of Priority at the School, “Students, children, temporary workers and women, whose care work is unpaid”. For everyone, distance learning is discriminatory: not everyone allows everyone access to knowledge and the right to study.

There are also those who say that the conditions are not there to resume in presence. “The schools must reopen, but the conditions are not there and we are sorry,” they told a Roma presidents of the school councils and trade unions of teachers and students. The safety conditions are limited numbers on public transport, but also the hypothesis of priority in vaccination for teachers. That would be more than a million people. The protest committees ask to go further: the complete health screening of teachers, Ata and students and the inclusion, as a priority category, in phase 1 of the vaccination agenda.

The common opinion is that the burden of infections to be attributed to something else falls on the school. 900 parents of high school students of the Veneto he sent an open letter to the president of the region Luca Zaia. “The high school children … interrupted their path in the classrooms in February 2020 and have not yet been able to seriously resume it, with the exception of just over a month at the beginning of this school year, some 75%, some 50 %, every other day or week. After a substantially “normal” summer, which also saw discos open, after a Christmas period in which they legitimately favor commercial activities, we wonder if the increase in infections can still be made to fall back on high schools, precluding everyone (teaching in the presence 0%) access to school and normal teaching, on the assumption that there is a fear of gathering outside the educational establishments “.
