The Screen Actors Guild of America (SAG-AFTRA) and its large studios Hollywood will return to the negotiating table on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after management at the film and television studios called off talks, saying there was a wide gap in the two sides’ positions. The Union’s negotiating committee confirmed in a message to members that the approach to restart talks came from management.
“It is clear that the strength and solidarity shown by our members has sent a clear message to the chief executives. As we have said repeatedly, we are ready, willing and able to commit immediately to meet and work at the bargaining table to reach an agreement that is worth your sacrifice,” the SAG-AFTRA bargaining committee announced.
The return to negotiations came, as well internal pressure increases to SAG-AFTRA leadership to find a way to resolve the disputes. THE George Clooney and other top Hollywood stars submitted a proposal to end the actors’ strike, but it was deemed unenforceable by the Union’s presidency, as reported by APE-MPE.
On the first day of the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, union president Fran Dresser was asked how long she expected it to last. “We are ready to go for six months if necessary,” he said. 100 days of mobilizations have been completed, it is about longest actors’ strike in Hollywood history.
Among the demands of the actors are general increase in wages, fees for films and series available on streaming platforms and settlement of issues related to the use of artificial intelligence. Duncan Cram Ireland, the union’s chief negotiator, said the 100-day milestone was a reminder of how little substantive negotiations have taken place since the strike begans. “We will all reflect on the fact that it has been a long time and so many of these days have been spent in protest rather than in the bargaining room with the companies,” he said. Asked if he still thought it was possible for the strike to continue in January, he said: “I certainly hope it won’t last that long. But the two sides need to talk to move things forward.”
